Type Locality and Naming

Northeast Liaoning. The Songjiagou Fm was named by the Party of Geological Research, Liaoning Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1982. The type section is in Songjiagou, Chenqianhu Township, Tieling County, Liaoning Province. Upper-middle (5 of 6) formation of Shyatun Gr.

Synonym: （宋家沟组）


Lithology and Thickness

In the type section, the base of the formation is composed of white medium- to thick-bedded, pebbly coarse quartz sandstone. Lower part is grey sandy and muddy slate. Middle part is yellow-green muddy slate with white limestone lenses. Upper part consists of fine-crystalline limestone and thin- to thick-bedded muddy siltstone. The formation 334 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with underlying Shimen Fm

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Yangshitun Fm

Regional extent

Northeast Liaoning. It is distributed in Fanhe River drainage area and is stable both in lithological character and thickness in the lateral direction.
